You May Be Wondering
Answers to the questions we hear most often.
Do I need to know how to play chess?
No. Complete beginners and veteran players are equally welcome. We teach from the first move and match the pace to each person.
What if I learn slowly?
Then you are in good company. No one is timed, ranked or compared, and our facilitators teach at your pace. Read how we are designing the room in Our Third Space.
What if I have low vision or limited hand movement?
Absolutely. Everyone is welcome at our table, whatever their eyesight or mobility. We offer large-piece and tactile boards, and no one is ever rushed. Tell us what would help when you write, and we will plan for it.
What happens at a session?
Every session follows the same three parts, led in person by our facilitators: a real game, a real conversation and, if you wish, the chance to share a story from your life.
How are stories recorded and protected?
Only with your permission. You decide what is shared, and you can withdraw at any time. Every step is explained in our Story Consent & Withdrawal Policy.
Will chess prevent dementia?
No game can promise that. Research links mental challenge and social connection to brain health, and we offer both. We don't diagnose, treat, cure or prevent dementia.
When do sessions begin?
Our first sessions begin in the upcoming season, and we are finishing our curriculum now. Email us, or sign up for updates at the bottom of this page, and we will let you know as soon as dates are set.
How can I or my organization get involved?
Please email us with a little about yourself or your organization and what you have in mind: research, hosting sessions, volunteering or support. We will reply as soon as possible.
