About Us

Every mind deserves a worthy opponent, a listening ear and a story that is honored.

We are a growing foundation and a community built one table at a time, gathered around one big question: what if the later years of life were a time of intellectual growth, not retreat?

What We Believe

We believe every one of us is a thinker, a friend and a storyteller, at any age. One chessboard at a time, we honor the three things dementia and isolation try to take from us: the strategic mind, the social heart and the enduring legacy.

Together, we build what research links to a healthier aging brain: regular, demanding thought; real human connection; and a secure sense of who we are.

The Strategic Mind

Our minds deserve a real challenge, not a simplified one. Chess meets each of us where we are, then asks a little more with every game. Growing older doesn't mean we stop learning; it means we have more to bring to the board.

The Social Heart

We all deserve real human connection, not just care. Across the board, no one is a patient or a visitor, just a player with a move to make. A good game can turn strangers into friends and a quiet afternoon into something to look forward to.

The Enduring Legacy

Our lives deserve to be heard and remembered. Every one of us carries stories worth keeping: the people we loved, the places we've been, the choices that shaped us. With permission, we record them for the people who come next.

What We Do

Together, we integrate chess and storytelling to strengthen our minds, ease isolation and preserve the life stories of adults 65 and over.

Chess is a universal language. It does not need a shared history or the right words to begin, only two people and a problem worth solving together. At every table we build a Third Space: not home, not a clinic, but a welcoming room where each of us is met as a fellow thinker.

During each session, our facilitators ask questions that help our players reminisce about their past and connect with others. For those who are interested, deeper conversations record their life story and accomplishments. With each player's permission, those conversations become our Living Archive.

Who We Are

New to the board, and here for the long game.

The Knight's Tour Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit devoted to cognitive health, dementia awareness and brain longevity. We aim to work alongside health organizations, academic institutions and care facilities to support research, deliver programs for older adults and raise public awareness of dementia.

We are at the beginning, and we are building this together. Our curriculum is in development, and we will introduce the people guiding our work as our advisory council forms.

Our Six Principles

What we stand for, one move at a time.

  1. Social Connection

    A Reason to Sit Together

The board gives us something to share before we share anything else. The game starts the conversation, and curiosity carries it. For any of us who has gone weeks without a real exchange, a regular game becomes a standing appointment with another mind.

  2. Cognitive Resilience

    Exercise for the Thinking Brain

Every move asks us to hold a position in mind, weigh options and plan ahead. Regular, demanding mental activity is linked to a stronger cognitive reserve. In a study of 10,318 adults over 70, puzzles and chess were linked to a 9–11% lower dementia risk.

  3. Legacy & Storytelling

Our Stories, in Our Own Words

Telling our stories helps us hold on to who we are. While we play, one of our facilitators asks about the people, places and choices that shaped our lives. Each of us decides what to share, and every story is told in our own words.

  4. Emotional Resilience

Every Move Is Our Own Decision

Later life can bring a long list of choices made for us. At the board, every decision is ours, and so is the result. That steady sense of agency can build a confidence that reaches well beyond the game.

  5. Intergenerational Bridge

Age Doesn't Matter Across the Board

A retired engineer and a college student meet as equals, because the pieces move the same way for all of us. Younger players bring fresh energy, older players bring experience, and we all leave having learned something from each other.

  6. Accessibility

Everyone Is Welcome at Our Table

Our table has room for everyone. Beginners learn from the first move, large-piece and tactile boards are always on hand, and every game moves at the player's pace. We plan around each person's needs, so all of us can focus on the game.

What We Carry From the Table

A life, in its own words, for those who come next.

Two older adults smile and talk across a chessboard during a game.

Some of our best stories come out halfway through a game, when our hands are busy and our minds wander back.

We keep them in what we call the Living Archive: a permanent home for the wisdom, humor and history of the people we play with. Each storyteller decides what is shared, and the first stories will be published once our sessions begin.

The Story Behind Our Name

A knight's tour is a centuries-old chess puzzle: guide a single knight across the board so that it lands on every square exactly once. It takes patience, planning and care for the whole board. We hold ourselves to the same standard: every one of us counts, especially those the world tends to overlook.

Help Us Cover Every Square

We will welcome volunteers of every age: strong players, patient teachers and good listeners. If you would like to join us as our program opens, email us and tell us a little about yourself.
